New lesson 'Winter Lane Moonrise' Now Available
Learn how to paint this beautiful moonlit scene
In this lesson we step into a quiet country lane beneath a bright winter moon, where cool blue light sets the mood.
We’ll balance the silvery sky with the softer, slightly warmer tones around the cottage, hedgerow and stone wall, keeping the figures convincing without overworking the detail.
It’s a painting driven by atmosphere, with just enough detail to make it feel real.
In this 9 part tutorial, I’ll guide you step by step from the initial blocking in right through to the finishing touches, so you can complete this beautiful scene with confidence.

We’ll look closely at mixing muted blue greys to suggest cold night air without letting the scene feel flat. The sky should glow softly, with thin veils of cloud drifting across the moon and diffusing the light.

From there, we’ll build detail into the trees, snow covered fields and stonework, keeping edges controlled so the painting remains calm and cohesive.

We’ll also introduce subtle shifts in temperature. Even in a cool scene, small touches of warmth create depth and natural balance, bringing the whole painting to life.
This lesson is a little different, and there are a few challenges that will really stretch your observation and control.
By the end, you’ll feel far more confident tackling night scenes. We’ll focus on balancing those crisp, deliberate details with areas of softness, so the whole painting feels unified and calm. The goal is to create harmony across the surface and a believable sense of quiet stillness under the moonlight.
Take your time with it and don’t rush the subtle transitions. Stay patient, trust the process, and you’ll develop a much deeper understanding of how atmosphere and detail can support one another rather than compete for attention.
I hope you enjoy painting this as much as I did.
