Mastering the Comber Brush 🎨

One of my favourite tools for creating natural texture is the Series 5 Comber Brush. Its separated edge lets you create several fine marks at once, making it particularly useful when a single pointed brush would take too long.

What is the Comber Brush useful for?

The serrated edge creates groups of fine, broken marks that work beautifully for:

  • fur and feathers
  • fine blades of grass
  • ripples and reflections
  • soft foliage and natural texture
  • small dotted or broken details

Ways to use it

Use the brush flat when you want several fine marks in a single stroke. Turn it on its side for a more individual line, or use just the tips to create irregular clusters of dots and texture.

For subtle broken effects, use a relatively dry brush with very little pressure. If you need a longer, smoother mark, adjust the paint consistency gradually rather than heavily thinning it.

The biggest advantage of the Comber is speed: it suggests complex natural detail without forcing you to paint every strand, hair or ripple separately.
